Once in a while I get requests and submissions to publish guest-articles here on SBS. While in the past I didn’t know whether this was a fit for what I had in mind with Served, I have decided that I actually like the concept of sharing these stories, especially when they’re fitting the series of topics I’m reading into myself as well.

The submitted article below is written by Ria Balane and talks about the beautiful deliciousness called ‘Hot Buttered Rum’ and, yes, it includes a recipe to make your own historical & heartwarming Buttery Rum Toddy.

The season has shifted to brown and yellow hues, and without a doubt, everyone has had their fill of pumpkin pies and apple ciders. But the pile of leaves will soon be replaced by a blanket of snow, and people would be looking for something to keep them cozy and warm amidst the cold, harsh winds of winter.

Luckily, you wouldn’t need to look any further, as we have just the right cocktail for you! Hot Buttered Rum, a mixture of rum, batter, and ice cream, is a fall and winter drink with a sweet and comforting flavor. Its history dates back to the 1650s and has found its perfect use fighting off the cold. This cocktail remains to be the same perfect beverage until today, but instead of being strictly used for fighting the chills, it is now meant for sharing around the fireplace, celebrating the holidays with friends and families, or even for moments of individual peace.

Hot Buttered Rum Recipe

To some, the combination of rum and butter may sound strange, but if you’ve heard of ‘Butterbeer’ from the Harry Potter series, then you’d know for sure that this combination is rather delicious. Another impressive trait this drink possesses that you should about is that being similar to Hot Toddy, the Hot Buttered Rum is said to relieve colds as well as stress and tension.

What’s more, it’s quite easy to prepare! Here’s our best Hot Buttered Rum Recipe to get you started:

For the batter:
1 cup Butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup Brown sugar
1 tsp Ground nutmeg
1 tsp Ground cinnamon
0.25 tsp Ground clove
1 cup Vanilla ice cream

For the drink:
4 oz. Hot water
1 scoop Batter
2 oz. Aged rum
Cinnamon stick

How to: 
1. To prepare the batter, combine the ingredients listed above in a bowl.

(To achieve the best texture and consistency of the mixture, we recommend using an
electric mixer. Make a larger amount of batter if you are planning to hold a party, or just
want to have a glass of Hot Buttered Rum every now and then.)
2. Transfer the batter/butter mixture into a plastic container. Put it in the fridge and freeze for an hour.
3. After a good 45 minutes of waiting, boil enough water to fill your mugs.
4. Take a scoop of the batter and put it into your mug.
5. Add hot water and then aged rum.
6. Use cinnamon sticks or whipped cream (or both!) to garnish the drink and serve.
